The Coin Laundry Association’s LaundryCares Foundation received a strong, much-welcomed media push for its Free Laundry Day on March 15 in Norfolk, Va.
The event – which took place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Laundry Land in Norfolk – hosted more than 50 families, who completely more than 5,100 pounds of laundry.

In addition, on the day of the event, two employees from Laundry Land appeared on “Coastal Live,” the area’s morning news and entertainment show on the local CBS affiliate. During a five-minute segment, the laundromat’s representatives discussed the free laundry event, and proceeded to demonstrate the proper way to fold a fitted sheet. The show’s hosts, April Woodard and Cheryl Nelson, then attempted to follow suit – with mixed results.
Event Highlights
“There were a lot of kids at the free laundry event with their parents,” said laundry owner Michael Finkelstein. “The free pizza, snacks and coloring books were a big hit with them. And it kept them busy while their parents were doing the wash.”
Also, one first-time customer to the laundromat won a television during the event’s prize drawing.
“It was the first time she had been to this Laundry Land store,” Finkelstein noted. “And she told us it will now be her laundromat and she will be there weekly.”
“Free laundry days are the highlight of what LaundryCares does each and every year,” said CLA President and CEO Brian Wallace. “The impact a single load of laundry can make on a family isn’t lost to us, and it’s humbling to see the good it does in a community. Our goal is to continue to host free laundry days and reach more families in need across the nation.”
The Norfolk event was part of a concerted charity effort by the LaundryCares Foundation to provide laundry services and education to those in need. Hundreds of loads of laundry are typically completed during each free laundry day.
