Legislation GavelA bill has been introduced in the Illinois State Senate that would require new washing machines for both commercial and residential use to be equipped with microfiber filtration systems featuring a mesh size of not greater than 100 micrometers. This legislation, sponsored by State Senator Julie Morrison, would go into effect on January 1, 2030.

The bill, SB 2727, also states that the washers must “bear a conspicuous label that is visible to the consumer, in the form of a sticker or any other label type.” Additionally, those found in violation of this law would be subject to “a civil penalty not to exceed $10,000 for a first violation and not to exceed $30,000 for each subsequent violation.”

This pending legislation was referred to the state’s Environment and Conservation Committee on January 31. CLA will monitor the progress of this bill in the Illinois legislature. Additionally, CLA would like to thank its Strategic Corporate Allies – Alliance Laundry Systems, Cents, Dexter Laundry, and Girbau North America – whose generous support make it possible for the association to continue to strongly advocate on behalf of the laundromat industry against such legislative threats.
