CLA Director of Advertising and Sponsorship Sales Nika Thomas recently became a mentor for The Annabelle Project, which is a program where seasoned event industry professionals mentor college-age applicants of color for one year.
The aim of the project is to give the mentees the benefits of one-on-one professional expert advice from and connections to mentor networks to advance their careers. The program targets applicants from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as colleges and universities with high Hispanic concentrations.
“I would advise the next generations to stay focused, look at all options, and see what interests them,” Thomas said. “Don’t be pressured into making decisions, and don’t let others dictate your choice.
“You may not know what you want to do when you get out of college, but you will know when you’ve found it. You are not going to know what’s right for your career immediately. But, when you make the right decision, you’ll know it, and you’ll feel good about it. Above all, I would tell young people – don’t let bumps in the road discourage you, because they only make you stronger. Don’t rush things. Growing your career takes time, and moving fast will not get you there any faster.”
The Annabelle Project is designed to offer a comprehensive learning and networking experience for those eager to create a career in the event industry. The program spans a full year, offering a curated blend of structured learning, real-world experience, and one-on-one mentor interactions.
