Hutchinson Belt Drive Systems, a division of the global Hutchinson Group, has quietly become a key player behind the scenes in the laundry equipment sector. The company, known for its belt drive technologies and mechanical components, works with appliance manufacturers to improve performance and efficiency in home and commercial machines.
With a background in materials engineering and a focus on innovation, Hutchinson supplies components that aim to improve energy use, durability and acoustic performance. These technologies can be found in appliances across the globe, supporting quieter operation, higher spin speeds and a longer machine lifespan.
In recent years, the company has taken a more visible role in addressing issues specific to laundromat environments, including equipment safety and fire prevention.
Addressing Fire Risk in Laundry Equipment
One of Hutchinson’s latest developments is the Stop Fire Device®, a passive fire suppression system designed for use in dryers. The system is built from recyclable thermoplastic and filled with a fluid that activates under critical temperature and pressure conditions, releasing an extinguishing agent intended to stop small fires from spreading.
Dryer fires remain a concern for laundromat owners and manufacturers alike, contributing to costly equipment damage and operational downtime. Hutchinson says the Stop Fire Device was developed as a response to that risk and is designed to work without external power or sensors.
“Safety is a growing priority for appliance manufacturers and end users,” said Vincent Jouannard, executive vice president of Hutchinson Belt Drive Systems. “Our goal is to support that shift with reliable, integrated solutions.”
The company is also investing in technologies around anomaly detection and connected devices, offering data-driven tools to monitor system performance and detect issues before they lead to breakdowns.
Shift Toward Sustainable Components
In addition to fire protection, Hutchinson is exploring how mechanical parts can contribute to broader environmental goals. Its Resolution Belt, introduced at Texcare 2024, is described as the first eco-designed belt for Hutchinson laundry appliances, incorporating recycled materials and built for energy-efficient performance.
The product is part of a wider trend among manufacturers looking to reduce their carbon footprint through improved materials and longer-lasting components. According to Hutchinson, the belt also contributes to noise reduction and improved energy classification of machines.
“It’s part of a long-term push toward greater sustainability in laundry operations,” said Jouannard.
Q&A: North America Sales Manager Luis Mourao, Hutchinson Belt Drive Systems
What is the most pronounced trend you’re currently seeing in your segment of the industry?
There is a noticeable emphasis on safety and sustainability. Fire prevention, particularly in dryers, has become a focus area, and solutions like the Stop Fire Device® are part of that effort. At the same time, manufacturers are looking for components that are more durable and environmentally responsible.
What are you most excited about going forward?
Participating in events like The Clean Show this August offers a chance to engage directly with manufacturers and operators, and to discuss where the industry is headed. We’re also expanding our partnerships in the European market and continuing work with manufacturers such as Tecnitramo.
From a business perspective, what are you most concerned about?
Fire hazards remain a top concern, both from a safety and a business continuity standpoint. Downtime, damage and reputation loss all have serious impacts. That’s why fire prevention technologies are a priority in our development pipeline.
Where do you see your niche of the laundromat industry headed?
There’s a clear shift toward components that support more sustainable Hutchinson laundry operations — products that last longer, perform more efficiently, and reduce environmental impact. As expectations around energy and materials evolve, we see continued demand for solutions that align with those goals.
What’s the biggest reason for laundromat owners to be optimistic about the future?
The industry is showing steady growth, with U.S. laundromat revenue is expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2025. At the same time, tools and technologies to improve safety and efficiency are becoming more accessible. That combination of growth and innovation points to a positive outlook for operators.
