Laundry Capital Co. LLC recently hosted a memorial event at Clean Rite Center in the Bronx, N.Y., to remember the victims of a recent apartment fire in the neighborhood.
On January 9, at Site 4 of Twin Parks North West – a 19-story public housing building in the Bronx – the fire killed 17 residents and displaced hundreds more in what is considered the city’s worst fire disaster in 30 years.
During the recent memorial event at Clean Rite Center, a mural – commissioned by Laundry Capital and created by Bronx-based artist group Tats Cru – was unveiled. In addition, the Hip Hop Food Truck and Laundry Capital donated food to the event, and $20 laundry cards were provided to apartment residents who had been displaced by the fire.
“This mural will create awareness of the victims of the fire and add color to the neighborhood,” said Tats Cru artist Hector Nazario.
Tats Cru – a group of artists, including Nazario, Wilfredo Feliciano and Sotero Ortiz – have painted murals throughout New York City since the 1980s.
“It’s not often that we do murals like this on laundromats,” Nazario added.
Nonetheless, Laundry Capital owner Alex Weiss felt it was important to do so. Laundry Capital owns and operates 40 laundromat locations in the outer boroughs of New York City, and more than 30 additional locations across seven other states. Each one, according to Weiss, is dedicated to giving back to the communities they serve.
“We wanted to honor the lives that were lost in that terrible tragedy by ensuring their memory would live on forever as a permanent staple of the Bronx community,” he said.
