As part of the 2024 legislative session, various lawmakers in Nebraska have introduced no fewer than eight bills that seek to expand the sales tax base within the state. Currently, self-service laundry is exempt from the collection of sales tax in Nebraska.
However, if any of these bills were to pass, store owners in Nebraska would be responsible for remitting revenue to the state equal to the prevailing sales tax rate in their areas. For example, laundromats in Omaha would be required to pay 7 percent of their gross revenues. According to CLA’s annual survey, this financial burden would exceed $17,500 per store per year.
As it has done in the past, CLA is engaged in preventing this damaging and expensive legislation from becoming law in that state. Of course, CLA would like to sincerely thank its Strategic Corporate Allies – Alliance Laundry Systems, Cents, Dexter Laundry, and Girbau North America – whose generous support make it possible for the association to continue to strongly advocate on behalf of the laundromat industry against such legislative threats as those currently facing owners in Nebraska.
If you’re a laundromat operator in Nebraska, you’re strongly urged to reach out to your local representatives and share your concerns over what such a sales tax on self-service laundry would mean to you and your customers.
