Our laundry card and app payment system stands as the cornerstone of our operational overhaul. This technology not only facilitates seamless transactions but also provides us with invaluable insights into our revenue streams. By extending this system to our vending machines, we’ve achieved a number of benefits.
For example, our vending machines no longer accept cash, which minimizes theft risks and vandalism. Employees can refill machines without concerns about cash handling, thus ensuring safety and efficiency.
With fewer cash transactions, managing the business becomes simpler and safer. This shift away from cash also helps scale our business and improves the overall customer experience.
Additionally, our POS system for wash-dry-fold services enhances both efficiency and customer service. This system allows us to track orders, manage payments, and streamline operations, contributing to a more organized workflow.
And technology extends to our environmental controls and security measures. Smart thermostats help regulate store temperature efficiently, saving on energy costs and maintaining a comfortable environment for both customers and staff. Meanwhile, automatic door locks ensure that the store is secure during off-hours, giving us peace of mind and reducing the need for manual locking and unlocking.
Our camera system provides real-time surveillance, enabling us to monitor the store from 16 hours away. This capability is crucial for overseeing operations remotely, ensuring security, and addressing any issues that arise without needing to be physically present.
We also leverage online ordering and delivery services from Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Amazon for operational supplies. Automating the procurement of laundromat supplies and vending machine products minimizes the time spent on these tasks. Also, by cutting down on operational tasks, we can concentrate on revenue-generating activities and strategic business growth.
The integration of these technologies has had a profound impact on our operations:
Efficiency and Delegation: With automated systems in place, tasks such as cash collection and inventory management can be performed by any trained employee. This reduces reliance on specific individuals, lowers overhead costs, and enhances overall operational flexibility.
Remote Management: Operating from a distance is made feasible through real-time monitoring and automated systems. This capability allows us to manage the laundromat effectively without the need for constant on-site presence, which in turn reduces management costs and increases operational efficiency.
Is it possible to succeed in today’s laundry industry without a solid grasp of technology? While success is always possible, understanding and leveraging technology significantly enhances your chances. Being tech-savvy enables you to integrate modern solutions into your business, streamline operations, and stay competitive. Technology is not just an asset but a necessity in today’s market.
Embracing technology is not just about keeping up with trends; it’s about transforming how we operate and thrive in a competitive environment. For the laundry business, implementing technologies like payment systems, smart thermostats, and remote management tools has revolutionized operations and improved the bottom line. In the broader context, being tech-savvy is essential for adapting to and excelling in today’s fast-evolving business landscape. As we continue to integrate advanced technologies, both professionally and personally, we pave the way for greater efficiency, security, and success.

For us, continually integrating new technologies into our business has become second nature, with each innovation offering unique advantages. Recently, we’ve made significant strides in optimizing our route density through two new technological approaches.
One of the most exciting recent developments in our laundry business is the use of promotional texts to maximize route density. Here’s how it works:
Efficient Use of Time: Windshield time – when drivers are simply traveling without delivering – is a major cost. Our routing system identifies when drivers have extra capacity within their routes. To reduce this inefficiency, we deploy a programmatic marketing text to potential customers in the area.
Seamless Customer Engagement: The promotional text offers a coupon for scheduling an order, and customers can reply to the text to automatically schedule their service. This process not only fills up the available space in the route but also applies the coupon and adds the new order to the driver’s manifest.
Cost-Effective Routing: By filling these gaps with scheduled orders, we reduce wasted windshield time and increase the productivity of each van route.
Another approach we’ve implemented is the concept of Neighborhood Laundry Day, a gamified discount system designed to boost route density:
Gamification and Incentives: We’ve introduced a system where customers in high-performing neighborhoods can schedule services on a specific day of the week. As more neighbors participate, the discount percentage on everyone’s orders increases.
Technology-Driven Experience: Our apps and website handle the scheduling, discount calculation, and customer notifications, creating a fun and engaging experience. For instance, if you live in a designated neighborhood, you might see increasing discounts as more people from your area book services on the same day.
Both promotional texts and gamified discounts have significantly improved our route density. By filling in available capacity and encouraging bulk scheduling, we optimize each van route, reducing the time drivers spend on the road without generating revenue.
With more orders scheduled per route, we’re seeing an increase in revenue per van route. This enhanced efficiency helps offset the costs associated with developing and implementing these technologies.
While building and integrating these technologies requires investment, the return on investment is evident. The improved route density and increased revenue per route make the technology cost-effective and valuable in driving business growth.
Is it possible to succeed in today’s laundry industry without being tech-savvy? While anything is possible, having a grasp of technology significantly enhances your chances of success.
Technology should be seen as a tool in your business arsenal. It’s not a magical solution but an enabler that can streamline operations and improve efficiency when used correctly.
Ultimately, technology alone cannot fix a poorly run business. Success still hinges on core business principles such as customer service, operational efficiency, and effective management. Technology can enhance these areas but cannot replace the need for a solid business foundation.

One of the most significant advancements in laundry technology for us is the ability to network washers and dryers. This feature has fundamentally changed how I manage my laundry business, offering some unprecedented advantages:
Real-Time Collection Information: Imagine the freedom of knowing exactly how much money is in every coin box at any given moment. This capability allows me to make informed decisions about when to collect funds. Whether I’m playing tennis or on vacation, I can monitor my machines in real time, and plan collections accordingly. This insight also helps me guide my staff more effectively, ensuring they collect the right amount at the right time.
Comprehensive Metrics: Gone are the days of manually tracking performance and guessing how different machines are faring. With machine networking, I can generate comparative reports for various time periods or specific machines. This data-driven approach provides clarity on my business’ performance, helping me make strategic decisions based on concrete metrics.
Remote Problem Solving and Enhanced Customer Satisfaction: With the ability to start machines remotely or offer free washes and rinses, I can resolve problems immediately. This prompt response is vital for customers on a tight budget who need their clothes cleaned quickly, rather than waiting for a refund process.
Service Alerts and Notifications: The convenience of real-time service alerts cannot be overstated. These notifications help identify problems like drain and fill errors before they escalate. In the past, a store-owner client of mine faced a month-long issue with older equipment, resulting in a water bill three times its usual amount. Today, with real-time alerts, such issues are promptly addressed, ensuring a consistently positive customer experience and operational efficiency.
In addition, the integration of credit card readers and payment apps has further revolutionized the laundromat experience. We utilize a payment app provided by the manufacturer, which brings several benefits.
The app’s default feature includes a “superwash” option for an additional fee. Customers rarely opt out of this feature, leading to a significant increase in “superwash” usage. This added revenue not only offsets the processing fees for the app, but also enhances customer convenience.
The app collects customer information, including email and home addresses. I leverage this data to send personalized thank-you notes. To date, I’ve sent more than 2,500 handwritten notes. The positive feedback on social media platforms like Yelp and Google has been immensely valuable, fostering goodwill and boosting our online reputation.
What’s more, operating in an urban area can present unique challenges, particularly regarding security. To address this, we’ve implemented two distinct camera systems and a segmented alarm system. The alarm system enables us to protect the office while disabling the alarm in the laundry area when staff needs to leave temporarily. This layered approach to security ensures that both areas are safeguarded appropriately, even as the staff manages the premises.
Clearly, the integration of advanced technology in laundry management has not only streamlined operations, but also enhanced customer satisfaction and safety. With these innovations, the future of laundry management looks not only more efficient but also more responsive to the needs of both business owners and customers alike.

Since opening our laundry business in July 2021, we’ve embraced technology as a fundamental part of our operations. Our approach has been decidedly tech-centric from Day One, integrating a range of tools and systems designed to streamline processes, enhance customer experience, and support our business objectives. Here’s an overview of the technologies we’ve implemented, how they’ve impacted our operations and bottom line, and the broader implications for the industry.
We operate as a card-only store using one industry provider for laundry management and a separate vendor for our point-of-sale system. Although this setup may not have reinvented the wheel, it has become the foundation of our business model.
The card-only system eliminates the need for cash handling, reducing theft and operational hassles. Customers use pre-paid cards for transactions, which simplifies payment processing and increases security.
And the tech companies we’ve partnered with business management and POS systems provide us with integrated solutions for managing laundry operations and processing payments, ensuring smooth daily operations.
In addition, to monitor and manage water usage, we’ve integrated Alert Labs technology into our operations. This provides real-time insights into water consumption, helping us detect and address issues such as leaks or inefficiencies promptly. By tracking water usage, we can identify opportunities to reduce waste and lower utility costs, contributing positively to our bottom line.
A company called Beambox serves dual purposes for us by providing customer internet access and enabling targeted marketing. Free Wi-Fi provided by Beambox enhances the customer experience, making our laundromat a more appealing place for customers to spend their time.
Moreover, Beambox helps us run targeted marketing campaigns. By capturing customer data through Wi-Fi sign-ins, we can tailor promotions and offers to our clientele, increasing engagement and driving repeat business.
Technology allows me to oversee the business and make strategic decisions while maintaining a balanced lifestyle. It enables remote management, so I can focus on growth and business development without being tied to the physical store.
While it is possible to succeed without deep technical knowledge, understanding the benefits technology offers is crucial. Technology should serve as a tool that enhances business operations rather than a barrier to entry.
Technology providers must prioritize user-friendly design and intuitive interfaces. If technology is complex or challenging to use, it detracts from its value. Simplified systems that provide actionable insights can empower owners and operators to make informed decisions without requiring extensive technical expertise.
Beyond the laundry business, technology plays a vital role in my personal and professional life – my laptop and cell phone are indispensable tools. They enable me to manage business operations, communicate with my team via Microsoft Teams, and handle virtually all tasks remotely.
Thanks to these devices, I can focus on strategic growth and business management while staying connected to my team and overseeing operations from a distance. They are crucial in structuring my life the way I want, allowing me to balance work and personal commitments effectively.
Although technology is a powerful tool, it’s crucial to focus on the benefits it provides rather than getting caught up in its complexity. As we continue to leverage technology, both in our business and personal life, we are better positioned to manage operations efficiently, drive growth, and maintain a fulfilling work-life balance.

For those of us in the laundry industry, integrating technology isn’t just about keeping up with trends – it’s about leveraging tools that can streamline processes and drive success. Here’s a look at how various technologies are shaping our laundry business, their impact, and the balance between embracing innovation and maintaining operational efficiency.
For over a decade, I’ve been immersed in the technology of payment systems. My approach mirrors that of industry giants like McDonald’s and Walmart, which means offering a range of payment options. This “all of the above” strategy includes cash, card, or mobile pay options.
While not all of my stores offer every payment method yet, we’re steadily increasing the number that do. Currently, around 65 percent to 70 percent of our stores support various payment methods, reflecting our commitment to accommodating diverse customer preferences.
By providing multiple payment options, we enhance convenience for our customers and improve overall satisfaction. This flexibility is crucial in today’s market where convenience often dictates consumer choices.
We’ve also integrated Paychex for payroll management, a move that has significantly improved our efficiency. Transitioning from a manual payroll approach has simplified the process, while ensuring compliance with government mandates and reducing the risk of errors.
In addition, this system helps us stay on top of tax regulations and employee benefits.
We also now use a system called uAttend for clocking in personnel, which has further streamlined operations. This system facilitates accurate tracking of employee hours, reducing administrative burdens and helping ensure fair compensation.
For monitoring vehicle expenses, we recently adopted WEX for monitoring gasoline purchases. It provides detailed insights into fuel usage, helping us manage costs and optimize vehicle performance. Although it’s a recent addition, it’s already proving valuable in maintaining operational efficiency.
Also regarding our business fleet, we preparing to install GPS monitors in our vehicles, a move recommended by our insurance carrier. GPS monitoring can lower insurance premiums and provide detailed data on driving habits, which contributes to safer and more efficient vehicle usage.
The ability to track and monitor vehicle locations adds a layer of security and accountability.
Along the way, we’ve also upgraded our security – from basic DVR systems to higher resolution cameras with cloud storage. This newer system offers better image quality and clarity, enhancing our ability to monitor and protect our assets.
Alongside those physical security upgrades, we’ve invested in cybersecurity to protect against digital threats. Ongoing updates and research into security solutions are crucial to safeguard our operations.
Success in the laundry business doesn’t necessarily require deep technical expertise. It’s more important to understand how technology benefits your business, rather than being intimately familiar with every detail. Effective use of technology can be managed with the help of knowledgeable staff or external support.
Embracing technology should be about strategic implementation that aligns with your business needs and budget. No doubt, it’s essential to balance technological investments with core business operations.
Furthermore, technology adoption doesn’t have to happen all at once. Integrating new tools and systems gradually allows for better management and alignment with your budget.
Keeping software and systems updated is vital for maintaining efficiency and security. Regular updates help protect against vulnerabilities and ensure that you’re leveraging the latest advancements.
At Associated Services, technology is a powerful ally in our laundry business – from payment solutions and payroll management to security systems and communication tools. As we continue to embrace and adapt to technological advancements, we position ourselves for sustained growth and success in the markets we serve.

Wichita, Kan.
With a background in computer information systems and a career spanning 25 years in programming and systems analysis, I have always believed in the power of technology. Since opening The Laundry Station, my approach to technology has been guided by two core principles – enhancing the customer experience and enabling business management from anywhere in the world.
The introduction of our equipment manufacturer’s business management software and our app payment system in 2018 marked a significant milestone for The Laundry Station. As one of the first laundromats in the United States to utilize this cutting-edge technology, we’ve experienced a transformation in how we manage our operations.
The system provides detailed analytics on payments, machine usage, and customer behavior. From monitoring fill and drain times to tracking user spending patterns and visit frequencies, the data available is both comprehensive and invaluable. For us, diving into this data is a delight – my husband and I thrive on analyzing spreadsheets and uncovering insights.
The system also offers state-of-the-art touchscreen equipment, which not only informs customers about machine functions and pricing but also allows them to customize their washing experience. Descriptions in multiple languages and a-la-carte pricing enhance transparency and improve customer satisfaction.
Additionally, our wash-dry-fold POS system is central to the smooth operation of both of our locations. The POS system supports barcode scanning for laundry products, snacks, and drinks. It handles cash, credit, and debit transactions, ensuring accurate and efficient payment processing. This setup promotes direct interaction between customers and attendants, fostering a more personalized service experience.
For drop-off laundry, the POS system integrates with a weigh scale to manage and track orders effectively. We generate professional receipts and bag labels, and send text notifications to customers when their laundry is ready for pickup. The system also allows for precise timekeeping and financial reporting by location.
Next, our VOIP phone system with an integrated phone tree simplifies communication. The phone system routes calls based on customer selections, reducing the need for multiple contact numbers. This setup allows callers to be directed to the appropriate store, manager, or our pickup and delivery service, enhancing customer service efficiency.
I can access call logs remotely, ensuring I stay informed about communications and operations even when I’m not on-site.
Security is paramount at The Laundry Station, so we have installed keypad locks on restricted rooms to provide secure access and log entries, which can be monitored and managed remotely. This system ensures that only authorized personnel can enter sensitive areas, improving overall security.
In addition, we manage the environment at both of our laundromat locations with Wi-Fi-enabled thermostats. I can monitor and adjust thermostat settings remotely, ensuring optimal conditions in both stores without needing to be physically present.
Our alarm systems include door, glass break, and motion sensors – all monitored by a professional company. In the event of a security breach, I receive an immediate alert and can make informed decisions about contacting authorities. The camera system allows for real-time monitoring and review of footage.
Our investment in 4K camera systems ensures comprehensive surveillance. With the ability to view, playback, and download footage remotely, we maintain a high level of security and oversight at both locations.
Lastly, we’ve implemented Airtags and Cart Cops tracking technology to help locate and recover missing laundry carts quickly, thus reducing losses in that area.
The technologies we’ve adopted streamline operations, enhance customer service, and provide critical data for decision-making. From managing payments and sales to overseeing security and environmental controls, technology has made running The Laundry Station more efficient and effective.
The ability to monitor and manage various aspects of the business remotely – from financial transactions to environmental controls – provides unparalleled flexibility. Whether I’m on a cruise ship or at the beach, I can stay connected and maintain control over business operations.
At The Laundry Station, technology is not just an addition – it’s integral to our success. From advanced payment systems and data analytics to remote management tools and state-of-the-art security, embracing technology has transformed how we operate and serve our customers. For any business owner in 2024, leveraging these technologies is essential for staying competitive and efficient in a rapidly evolving landscape.
