With Democrats in Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Minnesota making a clean sweep of the governors’ mansions and both houses of Congress during the midterm elections in November, state and local government relations firm MultiState Associates recently speculated on what this could mean for taxation in those states:
“When Democrats have trifecta control over the levers of power in a state, they are significantly more likely to enact policies to increase state revenues, compared to Republicans and divided governments,” MultiState reported. “At the highest level, we expect Maryland Democrats to pursue new taxes on the technology sector, Massachusetts lawmakers to continue to look at ‘modernizing’ the tax code with regard to digital services, Michigan Governor Whitmer will lead the charge on new transportation funding, and Minnesota politicians will look to bring additional money in for the education system.”
