The Bureau of Engraving and Printing has reported that the upcoming currency redesign process – including the new $20 notes to feature a likeness of Harriet Tubman – is on schedule.
In 2013, the Advanced Counterfeit Deterrence Steering Committee indicated that the $10 note would be the next one to be redesigned, and it is expected that this update to the $10 note will occur around 2026, according to the BEP. This currency redesign will be followed by the $50, $20, $5 and $100 notes, pending any new developments in counterfeiting threats or technology issues. Currently, it is expected that the redesigned $20 note will be released sometime in 2030.
Once production is underway, the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, as the issuing authority and central bank, will determine the actual issue dates for these redesigned notes.
The primary reason for currency redesign is security against counterfeiting, not aesthetics. Therefore, the redesign timeline is driven by security feature development, and the redesign sequence for the denominations is determined by current or potential security threats.
